SCHOLARSHIP NEWS

The Scholarship Committee is now operational under the new guidelines as proposed in the 1999 newsletter. The committee, consisting of four board members (Eileen Fabbri, Alberta Huey, Paulette Schmelzlen, Art Julian, Chairman) and three at large members (Yvonne Madey, Treasurer, Dr. Richard Sunseri, Robert Crusciel, Jr.) have been meeting and modifying the basic structure of the rules and regulations.

One of the most important aspects of a scholarship committee is the careful and meticulous handling of finances. Board members, along with a finance planner from the Portage National Bank have been studying a finance portfolio that could give us a better money return for our investment. The committee decided to distribute major scholarships over a one year period instead of smaller scholarships over a 4-year period.

Olenik/Alumni Scholarship $1000
Matthew McTavish Scholarship $1000
Erculiani Scholarship $500

The Scholarship Committee will have control of proper procedures needed to disseminate the scholarships, inviting recipients and guests to the annual Homecoming. The Scholarship Committee assumes the right to have the final decision on all matters pertaining to scholarships.

They must be academically in the upper half of their class and consider enrollment in a bon-a-fide post secondary school. This includes tech schools, non-academic art schools, cooking schools, beautician schools, etc.
  2. When the time comes for scholarship activities, the following time table will be considered.
    1. The applicants can send in application any time up to August 8, after graduating high school.

  3. All single year donors must keep scholarship at a minimum of $250. They can designate any amount over $250 as they desire.
  4. The Gallitzin Area Alumni Association will host the donors and recipients of the Denis Bozella Scholarship and the Helen Bosko Rodgers award.
  5. Please remember that the revision of the scholarship and by-laws of the new Gallitzin Area Alumni Association have been considered to make sure that perpetuity prevails in all our deliberations. We’re thinking positively.
The Scholarship Committee of the Gallitzin Area Alumni Association and the former Gallitzin-Greater Gallitzin Joint High School will gladly confer with any person/families wishing to establish a scholarship.
